I’m off to Washington DC today, I only booked my Greyhound this morning as I was planning to visit the Eastern State Penitentiary, but I walked so much yesterday and I’ve seen so much that, to be honest, I can’t really be bothered today.
Next to the Greyhound station in Philly is a fabulous food market, there are dozens of choices from all American to Thai, Greek and Korean. I decided it was time to try a corn dog. I just went for the standard version as it was my first one. Verdict, not bad, but I think it would be improved by some of the extras on the menu.
You can add various spices to the flour that make up the corn part and of course relishes to suit.
Elwood Blues reclines outside another cafe, funny that, shouldn’t he be in Chicago!
Again many of the Greyhounds are cancelled or delayed, due to the snow storms that I seem just skip town ahead of. Mine was not cancelled thankfully and so I settled in for the ride.
Then 25 minutes north of Baltimore, where I was due to transfer to another bus, we broke down. On the expressway no less! The driver radioed in to base, but warned us it would be several hours until help arrived.
At that very moment I had my finger poised over the book now button for my hotel in Washington DC and so I swiftly removed it. I might have to spend the night in the Baltimore bus terminal.
However, as I said they are strivers here and the bus driver was out in the lashing rain trying to flag down another bus in the hope they could take us all to Baltimore.
After almost a hour he succeeded and another Greyhound bus stopped for us. Not only was there room for all of us, but it was actually my transfer bus from Baltimore to Washington DC. So I hopped on and was whisked all the way to DC, arriving only 3 minutes late! How jammy is that… Manure and smelling of roses comes to mind.
Union station is the main bus depot for Washington. The subway system is very different to New York. It’s not called the subway for a start, but the Metro. Prices start at $2 a ride, which is cheaper than New York, however the price goes up the longer you ride it. Whereas you can ride the subway from end to end for $2.75 in NYC. You also need an app, which you put in your phone wallet and charge up.
My hotel is pretty much a stones throw from the White House and has some views for once. I ate at a local American restaurant called simply The Pig, I went for their half rack of ribs, which was great. Then I popped into a dive bar that had some American football games playing on a couple of screens. The long bar was packed with people laughing, chatting and just having a good time.
One thing I’m not so keen on is the way they heat their hotel rooms here. There is some sort of blower unit either hidden in the ceiling or hanging on a wall in every hotel I’ve stayed at. They go off with regularity through the night and they are all really loud and powerful. If you turn it off then you get cold after a bit as it appears to be the only source of heating. There are no radiators that I’ve seen. That’s it moan over 🙂 I plan to do a lot of sightseeing and walking tomorrow.
