Well perhaps not, but I am Providence bound. Hello Rhode Island.
Checked out of the my hotel to a nice bit of rain, so out came the emergency raincoat, which fits over me and the rucksack. Did the job even though I looked like an idiot.
I took a last stroll around central Boston and had an egg and bacon sandwich for breakfast. The options were to have it either on toast, an English muffin or a bagel. I wanted to go for a bagel, (my first one) but surely they have a big hole in the middle and my egg would fall straight through it. The server assured me it was only a small hole so it would be ok. It was 🙂
I’m taking the Amtrak to Providence and turned up at South station in good time. I am again impressed with what the US has to offer. The seats are wide and very comfortable with bags of legroom and power sockets. The driver and conductors were fun and full of banter. The train was high speed and before I knew it I was in Providence, all for the sum of 14$.
I have to mention the Dean hotel where I am staying. The welcome was special and the room beautiful. They had even left a hand written card on my pillow thanking me by name for starting the year with them.
They have several bars including a dimly lit, romantic wine/cocktail lounge at the back. It was mostly full of smartly dressed couples, who definitely have more than 4 outfits to choose from. As I am on my own and reliant on the meagre contents of my rucksack, I had a quick glass of wine and left, feeling a bit lonely.
Providence is a nice city, it’s hard to judge it properly as I was there on a bank holiday and I guess many people were home nursing hangovers.
I wanted to visit the state house museum, but it was closed so I walked around the city enjoying the sights.
There is a system here called spin, which is great or it would have been if I could have got the app to accept a foreign ID.
Rather than the ranks of bikes that you can hire to get around they have electric scooters. There are bikes as well, but it not that that makes it so good. What is brilliant is that you just leave them wherever you like. There are some rules, not in the middle of the road for example! Then you can just happen by one, think alright that’ll do me, swipe the app and off you go. The only thing I’m not sure about is how on earth do they get charged up. It says wireless charging on them, but surely they aren’t being charged, when just left on some random pavement. If you know, then answers on a postcard please.
In the evening I heading out to a bar I’d seen on a shortcut I’d taken earlier in the day. It was tucked away in a corner and I wouldn’t have found it otherwise.
I went for a healthy option of grilled chicken, green beans and rice. The chicken was really good as were the beans, very al dente as I like them. There was some live music, but it was a Christian couple who often added Jesus into the lyrics of their songs.
Talking about Jesus, the receptionist, when I said where I lived, told me as I was checking out, about how Jesus had let her down. She wanted to be a model, but even though her sisters are both over 6 feet tall, Jesus didn’t listen to her prayers and give her the long legs she wanted. If he had, she said, she would be in the south of France as a model, living the high life and getting up to no good! She phrased it rather differently to that, but I couldn’t possibly repeat it.
