I was supposed to take the car back to Oklahoma City airport today, but I have amended my booking, so that I can leave it at Dallas Love airport instead.
Once I’d checked the tyre warning light was just down to the cold weather again, I was off and Texas bound.
Dallas is a couple of hundred miles due south and I make good time, again passing by a few Casino’s. The last one I pass just before the border is an odd looking building to say the least. It is a mix of famous iconic buildings from around the world. For example, The Parthenon, Houses of Parliament and Arc de Triomphe to name just a few. The clash in style and type of construction, to my eyes at least, is a mess.
I cross into Texas a bit north of Denton and I am soon assailed by what can only be described as Chaos. The road system makes spaghetti junction look like a Roman road, the exits are messy and confusing, traffic jams are everywhere. There are no decent places to stop, it’s just a huge conglomerate jumble. The petrol stations demand a zip code after your pin number, which means my cards don’t work as I don’t have a US zip code. In a word, I hate it.
I managed to find a bit of lunch in some place, I had some catfish, which was actually pretty good and made some plans. A stop in Dallas is no longer something I want to do and so I book a Greyhound to San Antonio. It leaves in an hour and a half, so I hop back in the car and head for the airport.
Having quickly dropped the car off, I grab an Uber to the Greyhound station, arriving just in time to get on the bus for the 4.5 hour journey due south to San Antonio. I don’t know about getting out of Dodge, but I’m glad I’m getting out of here.
Settling in to my seat and able to catch up on this blog and let someone else drive, I book myself a nice hotel in downtown San Antonio, feeling the need for a modicum of luxury and relax.
San Antonio is lovely, The Alamo is no more than 100 metres from me, but that is for tomorrow.
Tonight it was late, so I grabbed a burger from Mac D’s and quickly ate it before taking a stroll along the fabulous river walk they have that twists and turns through San Antonio. This being Texas every man and his dog has a gun. Even the security guard in McDonalds was carrying one. I suspect the diners are very well behaved!
Everywhere I go things are a little different. In Memphis there was always a cover charge to get in to the bars, whereas in Nashville not at all. Here in San Antonio, they appear to be unable to add prices to their drinks list. Food, no problem, but drinks forget it. Not a single place I visited in my whole time here, restaurants included tell you how much drinks are. Perhaps they just make them up depending on how well off you look.
There are no masks required here at all, the police wear stetsons and everyone is super friendly (as they have been all over the US).
I had a couple of local beers, before calling it a night. It’s been a long day. I started in Oklahoma and now I’m close to the Mexican border.
Sorry no photo’s for today.
Poursuite du voyage toujours aussi passionnant tu nous tiens en haleine( pas trop chargé j’espère) j’espère que tu trouveras des boissons à ton goût à Dallas à très bientôt pour la suite de tes aventures amitié Edith Luc
